Land is identity and Land is security.

For years, Northern Uganda, has been a source of conflict. For widows, for youth, for families already living on the edge, a land dispute rarely meant justice. It meant uncertainty. Fear that dragged on through courts that rarely moved fast enough to help.

Under RELAPU, (Responsible Land Policy Uganda) GIZ introduced another way. Alternative Dispute Resolution, Gender-sensitive leadership training and Community-based land mapping. Not a replacement for justice, but a faster, fairer route to it. Helping people settle disputes fairly, quickly, and peacefully, without ever setting foot in a courtroom.

I documented the project as a three-part personal stories, and a body of photography. Capturing both the impact of RELAPU and the human stories behind it.

My Approach

With the GIZ team, we travelled across Northern Uganda, interviewing local leaders, women’s groups, and families working through their disputes. Each film carries a different part of the RELAPU story.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
follows the community mediators themselves, women and men trained under the ADR model, sitting with families and helping them find a way through, together.

<figure
